1.1.2013 | MagicShifter

I'm currently working on the next iteration of the MagicShifter, an open source hardware gadget for lighting, gaming, and POV applications. It includes 16 very bight RGB LEDs and many sensors you can play around with ;)

9.10.2011 | Why RepRap and the Internet will save the world and why we don't have to worry even if it won't ;)

i fear the politicians are useless (they are working very hard at the moment on proving that by their handling of "the crisis", copyright law, data retention, education, etc...) but I still get more and more optimistic every day because:

1) nobody can stop the internet - a true bidirectional medium where everybody can publish anything (of course lots of crap and lolcats gets published but now we have a platform where the good things can grow in wikis, code repositories and similar webplatforms. Remember: wikipedia is only one instance of a collaborative website where usefull information grows...there are thousands of other wikis, githubs, sourceforges, ... :)

2) Which is really a continuation of the above point: There is a bloodless revolution building up on the 3d printer front http://reprap.org/wiki/Main_Page. They are already reproducing at an exponential rate now that they are very easy to build on a weekend or so...still building them by yourself scares people off but I'm pretty confident that during the next year or so there will be an open source, fully assembled model released in the 1500-2500€ price range that is as easy to use as a normal inkjet printer. You know Marx was only half right: We need to get back the means of production but we don't need to take it away from the capitalists...we print it ourselves. And this is only the start...in 1 or 2 years i predict we will see open source inkjet 3d printer popping up (if you look closely they already are online already but not very well documented yet: http://jeffreygough.com/files/portfolio-100dpi.pdf on page 17 and 18) and then its only some years till we have microscale multi material almost star trek replicator (but they will not be able to print food yet) like open source (and therefore cheap) 3d printers.

3) Which is really a continuation of the above point: Platforms like thingiverse where you can already NOW download free (as in free software) designs for EVERYTHING from japanese action toys, battery lids, replacement parts for stoves, dishwashers, etc. to jewelry, mobile phone holders for cars or bikes, u name it,... just take a look at thingiverse so you don't have to take my word for it: http://www.thingiverse.com

4) If mankind does not make it earth will still survive and in 500 million years or so we will have a new sentient species (maybe feeding on leftover plastic junk from the vanished human civilization) that will reinvent something like the internet :)

5.10.2011 | Metalab, Open Source 3D Drucker und selbstbestimmtes Lernen

Hier die Slides zu meinem Vortrag "Metalab, Open Source 3D Drucker und selbstbestimmtes Lernen"
bei der Veranstaltung "Lernen in der Netzwerkgesellschaft".

2008 | RepRap research program started

I got hooked to the RepRap project. Together with Marius Im working on Selfreplicating and Evolving 3D printing at Metalab. Here is a link to our blog: http://reprap.soup.io
And if you like this project as much as I do vote for it at the NetzNetz wahl am So. 5. Oktober 2008, 15 bis 18 Uhr, im werkzeugH (Schönbrunnerstrasse 61, 1050 Wien).
UPDATE: Thanks to all the people who voted for us we got 8800 euro founding to finance the RepRap research at Metalab for the next two years (this funding is only for material costs...we don't use it to pay salaries to ourself)

4.3.2008 | soup.io is cool!

For those of you who have not noticed yet I continue my micro blogging and link collection on wizard23.soup.io

27.3.2007 | Google Blacklists

I know the problem of google blacklisting domains from our http://kybernet.org domain. Google seems to actively blacklist it. A google search for kybernet.org shows lots of results that (almost) all link to kybernet.org but the domain itself is blacklisted. We had to add another domain http://kybkreis.org which shows exactly the same content. Yet this domain is not blacklisted and shows up as the first two search results. Now I heard that just the same thing happened to the domain of Google Will Eat Itself - an interesting web art project about automating buying of google stocks with income from google adwords on their page (which is just a brilliant idea). A google search for gwei.org shows simmilar results. Lots of direct references but no link to the domain. So much for "we don't do evil"-meme that google seeded. It's good though to see that the cencoring fails because of the secondary pages. If they started to blacklist these too they would loose valuable webpages and their services would become unusable. I just hope they don't refine theri blacklisting algorithms.

5.3.3007 | The Joy of Web 2.0

as sung by a happy clan member:

No no no! Don't you understand? GMail and Google Aps are totally far out cool, we just don't understand their new web based nature, man! Like, once you master the keyboard shortcuts, you can, like, totally automatically junk your mail or tag it with a label just the press of a key. And you can, you know totally, share your work with other people. They're not adding features liek headers and footers because that is so web1.0, dude. Christ someone above suggested adding support for tables? lol noob. Floating CSS DIV FTW!! For real! Not like those fuddy duddies with their grandpa's word processor cuz, like, they can't share their documents or nothing!! What about me you ask?? Me and my clan have our entire org chart on Google Aps, and we elected our leader over google chat, and we wrote our press release in Google docs so everyone could collaborate. It was transcendent! Uhh, I mean, it was cool!!11!!

10.09.2006 | RepRap in the Metalab!

When I first read about the RepRap project some years ago I could only dream about actually seeing a GNU licenced 3D Printer at work. Now the time has come :) Come and visit Vik Olliver's RepRap prototype at the Paraflows exhibition in the Metalab.

5.4.2006 | Audacity - a cool free audio editor and recorder

It never ceases to amaze me what cool tools have been developed by humans around the world. Or to make it more precise: I like free Software :) For many years I didn't recorde any sound files with my micropone because I just couldn't live with the 60 seconds limit of the crippled windows sound recorder. Today I decided to give the google search 'gnu sound recorder' a try and I feel much better now :) I can really reccomend audacity. It has all the features I'd expect from such a tool but I use it only to record my whisteling and practice speeches...

9.3.2006 | Plexxi remodded

And it can also collect pucks :)

23.2.2006 | Robo Servo Gripper

With this gripper I will finally be able to achieve World Dominition. Or Stefan and me will use it to give our robot Plexxi two more degrees of freedom :)

http://lists.metalab.at/mailman/listinfo abonnierbar.

Dezember um 19 Uhr, also in genau zwei Wochen, zusammenzurufen.

23.11.2005 | Stupid Interface

How much could be gained by a 'no to all' button. why these arbitrary asymmetries?
UPDATE: A reader told me that the combination of pressing shift and clicking No gives the required result: "No to all". Now thats a very intuitive UI. Anyway too bad I can't try it out right now as I switched to Ubuntu some months ago.

18.9.2005 | Photo Timeline

Happy Learning!

Warum macht das MIT das? Hier ein Auszug aus der Selbstbeschreibung des MIT OCW:

MIT OCW is a large-scale, Web-based electronic publishing initiative funded jointly by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and MIT. MIT OCW's goals are to:
  • Provide free, searchable, access to MIT's course materials for educators, students, and self-learners around the world.
  • Extend the reach and impact of MIT OCW and the "opencourseware" concept.

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do?
Nothing to kill or die for,
And no religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one,
I hope some day you will join us,
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one,
I hope some day you will join us,
And the world will live as one
